Gene therapy, a groundbreaking approach to treating genetic disorders, was first conceptualized in the 1970s, with significant contributions from scientists like Dr. W. French Anderson, who is often referred to as one of the pioneers of the field. In 1990, he performed the first successful gene therapy trial on a human patient, treating a girl with adenosine deaminase deficiency (ADA deficiency). This landmark event marked the beginning of a new era in medicine, where faulty genes could be replaced or new genes introduced to correct genetic abnormalities at their source. Since then, the field has evolved rapidly, driven by advancements in biotechnology and an increasing understanding of genetics, leading to numerous successful treatments for various genetic disorders.
